As Often As You Look Through Your Windows, You Also Look At Them!

January 28, 2010

Thermal Efficient Windows Provide Comfort Year-round

Carefully chosen, few investments can add more value to a home than new windows.
It is important to understand that the true value in windows is a combination of beauty, thermal efficiency, and performance.  That is why United Roofing sells and installs only triple-paned, thermal performance windows.

As often as you look through windows, you also look at them.  Each and every detail matters.
Select beauty to complement your home as well as efficiency.  Select slim, trim lines to create a graceful impression that emphasizes the view, not the window.  Make sure that frames and sashes have a carpentered look.  Choose locks and hardware that perfectly match the rest of the window, ones that practically disappear.

Energy savings — winter and summer.

Thermal efficient windows delivers value two ways—by providing real comfort year-round, and by helping save money on cooling and heating.  We use only windows that are designed to deliver outstanding thermal performance.

  1. Honeycomb frames filled with insulating air spaces that significantly reduce condensation;
  2. Double weather-stripping that locks out wind and weather;
  3. Double- and triple-paned integral glazing systems;
  4. High performance Low “E” glazing systems to keep summer heat out and winter heat in better than any other system in its class, and to significantly reduce damaging UV rays.

Don’t Be Left Out In The Cold. As often as you look through windows, you also look at them.   Each and every detail matters!

Energy Efficient Window Options

November 5, 2009

Choosing The Right Glass

Where you live has a lot to do with the type of glass you should purchase.  Thermal performance options like Low-E glass and argon gas can be added, but selecting the right combination is as important as selecting the right window configurations for your home.

When a room faces the sun for the majority of the day, we recommend one type of Low-E glass for maximum solar control.  Other rooms with less exposure can use less expensive Low-E glass.  If your home has “cold spots” or “hot spots” we recommend using windows with insulating argon gas for maximum energy efficiency.

If you have year-round shade from trees and shrubbery, you may not need a glass option that further reduces light transmittance, so your selection should be a literal reflection of your home and rooms’ locations.

Replace Your Inefficient Windows

October 20, 2009

The Importance Of Energy Efficient Windows

Every winter we all begin scoping out hardware and home supply stores for the latest in replacement windows to keep our heating bills down and our homes cold-air-free.

Rarely do we consider our window’s efficiency when it starts to get hot outside and we crank up the air conditioning.  Replacing your windows in the hot summer months can save you money and make your home a pleasant escape from the heat outside.

Leaving the doors and windows wide open may work in the early days of summer, but eventually you will want to turn on the air conditioning.  If your windows are leaky and inefficient, you wallet will feel it. Replacement windows that are energy-efficient can save you a good deal of money on your home air-conditioning (and heating) costs.  Replacing your windows now can save you money on your air-conditioning and heating bills.  Plus, higher-quality new windows will also add value to your home.  What’s not to like?

United Roofing has been a window, siding, and roofing contractor serving Minnesota homeowners for over 20 years.  With our many years of hands on personal experience, we are knowledgeable in all areas of home and property improvements.  Please call us at 612-617-1717. Selecting Roofing Material for Your Home or Business

October 10, 2009

Roof Materials

Cost, durability, and appearance are all factors to consider when choosing roofing materials.  The best roofing system for your home depends on which of these factors you weigh more heavily.  The following roofing materials are commonly used for residential “steep slope” roofs.

Asphalt Shingles – The most common roof covering across the U.S. is asphalt shingles.  The major advantage of an asphalt shingle roof is its relatively low initial cost.  Shingles vary significantly in quality and warranty, so check with your roofer for your options.  A typical asphalt shingle roof may last about 20 years.

Metal Roofing – Metal roofs are becoming increasingly popular among homeowners, especially among homeowners in warmer climates.  Metal roofing costs significantly more up front than asphalt shingles ($100 to $600 “per square” or 100 sq. ft.).  But the costs of the roof over the life of the roof may be competitive because metal roofs last significantly longer and may lower annual utility bills because they reflect heat very well.

Tile Roofing – Made from clay or concrete, tile roofs are extremely durable with warranties typically covering 50 to 75 years.  Tile roofing is heavy, so if you are replacing a lightweight material with tile, be sure that your roof supports are strong enough to bear the weight.  If not, reinforcing your roof structure can add significant cost to installing a tile roof.

Slate Roofs – Slate roofing is also very durable and looks great, but also costs more than other roofing materials.  Slate is quarried in the Northeast United States and a variety of colors and grades are available.

Choosing a new roof is a big decision and a major project.  There are many good choices in the market today, so it pays to spend a little time doing some research on what type of roof will best suit your needs.  You will want to make sure you are choosing the right roof for your house and budget.

No matter which roofing system your home or business needs, United Roofing has an assortment of materials to suite your needs as well as your budget.  Our skilled roofing experts are up to date and on top of the latest advancements in technology so that we can provide you with the materials and techniques to get the job done to your complete satisfaction.

Thermally Efficient Windows Resist Condensation

October 8, 2009

Energy Tax Credit Incentives For Doors and Windows

When it comes to windows and doors, making the right choice begins with having the right information.

Technology today has made it possible to manufacture windows that are more energy efficient, producing higher R-Values and lower U-values.  The R-value is the resistance a material has to heat flow.  The higher the R-value, the greater the resistance.

The U-value is the total amount of heat transferred through a material.  The lower the U-value, the slower the rate of heat flow, and the better the insulating quality.  This adds up to a more a door or window that is more resistant to condensation.

Uncle Sam wants you to save energy, and he is putting his money where his mouth is.  The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 includes tax credits for making your home more energy efficient.
