Dimensional Shingles For Your Minnesota Home

September 30, 2010

Dimensional Shingles

Dimensional shingles provide an opportunity to customize your roof to fit with the style of your home. Dimensional shingles, also known as architectural shingles, are thicker than other shingles and are used by many homeowners to achieve a unique appearance.  These shingles are also very durable and can last for 40 years or more. Read on to learn more about dimensional shingles.

Dimensional Shingles Materials
Dimensional shingles are constructed by fusing together two asphalt shingles.  This provides a more three-dimensional appearance.  Sometimes this resembles a shake roof, but dimensional shingles have better fire resistant qualities.  Plus, the material is thicker and provides added strength to the roof.

Dimensional shingles

Dimensional shingles are extremely durable.  They are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, including wind, ice and snow.  This material is also heavier and longer-lasting than composite roofs.  When using dimensional shingles, you don’t need to make structural improvements on your home, unlike with some heavy roofs.

Increased Safety
Dimensional shingles allow you to achieve a shake wood effect without the fire hazard.  In fact, some regions don’t even allow shake roofs to be built because of the safety risk.  A dimensional shingled roof is a better option for protecting your home against fire.

Maintenance of Dimensional Shingles
If you decide to install this type of roof, make sure to keep up with moss buildup.  Dimensional shingles are more prone than other types of roofs to have this issue.  Also, you’ll want to make sure the roof has adequate venting to reduce moisture buildup.  Most roofing companies offer maintenance services to keep your roof in good condition.

Warranties on Dimensional Shingles
Most dimensional shingles come with a warranty that will guarantee the product for 20 or more years.  However, some of these warranties have specific conditions.  For example, the homeowner may be required to have regular maintenance and moss removal on the roof.  Contact your local roofing contractor today to schedule your next roofing inspection.

Hiring a Professional for Dimensional Shingles

Dimensional shingles aren’t a difficult roof to install, however, as with any type of roofing, unless you have experience and all the proper tools, this is a job best left to the professionals. Roofing companies are skilled in installing dimensional shingles and have the experience to do the job quickly and accurately.  Get several quotes before deciding on a roofing contractor so you can compare materials, costs and warranties and ask if you can speak with other customers to determine if they were happy with the work.

Reflective Metal Roofing

Reflective Metal Roofing

  • Reflective metal roofing saves on energy costs because it is able to reflect solar energy back into the atmosphere.  This reduces the amount of energy absorbed into your home.
  • Qualified roof products can help reduce the amount of air conditioning needed in buildings.  This can reduce peak cooling demands by 10-15%.

The roofs that qualify are the metal roofs that have reflective qualities or the asphalt roofs that have “cooling granules.”  These roofs are specially designed to reduce the heat gain in the house thereby reducing the cooling costs.

United Roofing & Remodeling offers a wide variety of services designed to suit all our clients’ roofing needs.  For more information on any of roofing, siding, window, or gutter services, call us at 612-617-1717

Benefits Of TPO Single – Ply Roof Systems For Commercial Properties

September 22, 2009

Thermoplastic Polyolefin Roofing Membranes

Thermoplastic Polyolefins are a “new generation” of single-ply roofing systems

A typical low-slope roofing system consists of three components: a structural deck, a thermal insulation barrier and a waterproofing membrane, which consists of reinforcing fibers or fabric sandwiched between two sheets of flexible matrix. The matrix material is either asphalt- or polymer-based.  In “single-ply” membranes, the matrix is made of flexible polymer.  The reinforcement provides dimensional stability for the membrane as well as strength to resist stresses in service.  It is generally made of chopped short glass fiber strands packed in a mat, or continuous polyester fiber arranged in a grid or in a non-woven mat.

Benefits of TPOs
The following benefits and characteristics of TPO are:

  • environmentally friendly and recyclable
  • seams can be heat welded
  • available in many colors
  • resistant to heat and UV degradation
  • resistant to may chemicals
  • good cold-temperature flexibility
  • no external plasticizers added

The result is an ideal commercial roof systems that is reliable and cost effective.  The TPO system is one of the latest single-ply, flat roofing technologies on the market today.  United Roofing & Remodeling is proud to install these systems.  We carry 2 types of the TPO roofing products; TPO and TPO-1.

Single-Ply Membrane Roofing Installation And Repair Services In Minnesota

TPO, EPDM, and PVC are the three major types of Single-Ply membranes

Single-Ply membranes have been around for over 20 years.  The biggest advantages to these single-ply systems are is that they are light weight per square foot.  This makes them an ideal choice for retro-fitting over an existing roof system.  This allows for quicker installation, less disruptions to the building owner, and most importantly, cost savings.  Many single-ply membranes are white and provide superior reflectivity, which in turn helps to reduce A/C costs during summer months.  These roof coatings are very versatile and can be applied on a large variety of roof systems.  Extremely durable & easily installed by authorized contractors without disruption to daily operations, the roofing system is also leak-proof, energy-efficient, chemical & fire resistant, resistant to high winds, & virtually maintenance-free.

The importance of roof coatings cannot be ignored if you want to avoid the complications of roof repair.  Select only quality products for roof repairing will assure you of the best results and minimize future repair costs to your property.
